YOGA FOR BEGINNERS

YOGA FOR BEGINNERS

If you’re on a new fitness adventure or even if you’re already well on your way but are looking for some new ways to keep on track, a beginner yoga class can be just the ticket. Yoga will stretch your muscles, make you aware of the different parts of your body, and challenge you to breathe through it all. Although there are a variety of different yoga classes available, starting with a beginner class will ensure that you don’t push yourself too hard, and offer the basics you’ll need for a proper yoga foundation.

First of all, don’t be intimidated. Yoga is for everyone, and our classes are welcoming to people from all walks of life and at any fitness level. A beginner class will show you the proper form and body positions and help you to achieve or correct them. You won’t feel rushed or pushed but will be encouraged to participate at your own pace; after all, this is your yoga class. If you can’t correctly execute a certain position, we can help you to master a variant that will still stretch your muscles and still allow you to gain similar benefits for your body.

You might be tempted with so many bright and beautiful options out there, but don’t worry about what you’re wearing. The priority is your own comfort. If you tend to get hot quickly, we recommend a t-shirt or tank top and shorts or capris. Whatever you choose, wear something that allows your body free movement. Tie long hair back, and don’t worry about footwear; yoga is practised in bare feet.

If you don’t have your own mat, blocks or straps, don’t rush out and buy any. Our class can provide you with all that you need until you’ve determined whether or not yoga is for you.
So what positions will you learn during a beginner yoga class? At the beginning of class we’ll quietly and individually set our goals for the yoga session. Your goal can be anything you want it to be; that you simply attempt every pose, that you stretch further than you have before, or that your breathing is deep and consistent throughout the entire session.

Depending on the day, you might experience cat and cow, downward dog, plank, happy baby, mountain pose, warrior pose, cobra pose, pigeon pose, and child’s pose. Often we’ll let you know that if you need a break to get into child’s pose. It’s a great position in which to relax, regroup, and focus on your breathing. If you’re not familiar with any of these poses, that’s ok. You won’t be the only one, and we’ll make sure to explain and demonstrate so that you get the most out of every step of the way. Once class is winding down, we’ll end with shavasana; you’ll lie down quietly on your mat and have the chance to completely relax before heading out to once more face the world, refreshed and re-energized!
